It's all relative. Toyota aims for more polarizing designs because everyone else (aside from Subaru and non-Euro Honda) already have polarizing designs.

But it was never about Toyota not having eye catching designs. It was about not having well-resolved designs. Take the new NA Corolla's design, for one. At best, all it does is lets me know that it's new, and that's about it (it vaguely links it with the Avalon). EU Auris, on the other hand, has makings of a new, clean, easily identifiable design language (with mixed results on the Rav4).

If Toyota can have a unified design language for its insane array of cars, then it might just succeed in making good looking cars, but as it stands, we'll have some good looking cars with mostly humdrum looking cars (with bizarre detailing).
